Daniel R. Coquillette is Professor and Dean Emeritus at Boston College Law School, where he served as Dean from 1985 to 1993. In 1996, he was named the J. Donald Monan, S.J. University Professor at Boston College. Since 2008, he has also served on the faculty of Harvard Law School as the Charles Warren Visiting Professor of American Legal History, where he continues to teach. His scholarship and teaching focus on legal history and professional responsibility.
The author of many books, Coquillette鈥檚 works include听听(with Bruce Kimball) (Harvard University Press),听听(with Bruce Kimball) (Harvard University Press),听听(Colonial Society of Massachusetts),听听(LexisNexis),听听(Carolina Academic Press),听听(with Michael Cassidy & Judith McMorrow) (Lexis Nexis),听 (Edinburgh University Press), and听T (Duncker & Humblot).听He was the editor of听 (LexisNexis) and is now the senior editor of (LexisNexus).
Among his many activities, Coquillette was an advisor to the American Law Institute鈥檚 Restatement on Law Governing the Legal Profession and a member of the Harvard University Overseers鈥� Committee to visit Harvard Law School. For five years, he was Chairman of the Massachusetts Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics and the Task Force on Unauthorized Practice of Law. He also served on the American Bar Association Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Board of the American Society of Legal History, Massachusetts Task Force on Model Rules of Professional Conduct, Massachusetts Task Force on Professionalism, and Special Committee on Model Rules of Attorney Conduct of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. He is currently Consultant to the Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure of the Judicial Conference of the United States.
Coquillette was a law clerk for Justice Robert Braucher of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and Chief Justice Warren E. Burger of the Supreme Court of the United States. He has taught legal ethics and legal history at Boston University Law School, Cornell Law School, and Harvard Law School. He was a partner for six years at the Boston law firm of Palmer & Dodge, where he specialized in complex litigation.
